Iran, Iraq stress strengthening strategic ties, opening new avenues for cooperation

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi have stressed the need to preserve and strengthen the deep historical, cultural, religious and people-to-people ties between the two countries as a foundation for expanding strategic cooperation.

During a meeting in Tehran on Thursday, Pezeshkian and al-Zaidi discussed key issues of mutual interest and ways to further develop and deepen bilateral relations.

The two officials emphasized the need to accelerate the full implementation of existing agreements between Iran and Iraq, describing it as an important step toward upgrading bilateral ties and serving the mutual interests of the two countries.

They also stressed the need to activate shared capacities in political, economic, trade, transit, energy and regional cooperation.

The Iranian president and Iraqi prime minister highlighted the importance of continued coordination and convergence, describing the opening of new avenues for cooperation as a strategic necessity for the future of Tehran-Baghdad relations.

They said the expansion of comprehensive ties would not only help strengthen stability, security and prosperity in both countries, but also serve the interests of the two brotherly nations and contribute to greater regional solidarity and cohesion.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran earlier on Thursday on an official visit.
