The delegation arrived in Zurich late on Saturday. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Bagheri Kani, and Central Bank of Iran Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati are also part of the delegation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei, who is also accompanying the delegation, said before departure that the main goal of the trip to Switzerland is to ensure the implementation of the MoU.
“Any understanding or agreement is ultimately put to the test during its implementation. Given the other side’s track record of failing to honor its commitments, we must be firm and serious in demanding full compliance during the implementation phase,” he said.
Referring to the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon, Baqaei said the US was obliged to stop those attacks under the MoU but had so far failed to meet that commitment.
The MoU, announced by Tehran and Washington last week, was formally signed electronically by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump on June 17.
Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan helped broker the agreement, which formally ended the war waged by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. Pakistan, however, has been the main mediator and facilitator of the Iran-US talks that resulted in the deal, known as the Islamabad Memorandum, which calls for a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
Remembering Minab schoolchildren
“I regard the innocent children of Minab and all the martyrs of our beloved Iran as witnesses to my every action,” Speaker Ghalibaf said on his X account after arriving in Switzerland.
“They are watching us and they have expectations of us. I pray that I will not fail the innocent martyrs and the people of Iran, and that I will join my fallen comrades with honor. I count the moments until I see them again,” he said in the post.
Ghalibaf shared the post in remembrance of all those killed in the US-Israeli war of aggression, including 168 people mostly students massacred in a US airstrike on a primary school in the southern city of Minab on February 28, the first day of the war.
Pakistani delegation joins Swiss talks
According to the office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir are set to join the negotiations between the Iranian and American delegations.
The prime minister’s office announced late on Saturday that the two officials had departed for the Swiss mountain resort of Bürgenstock, where the talks will be held on Sunday.
According to the announcement, Qatari mediators will also participate in the talks.
