Behind the New Narratives Surrounding Iran-US Negotiations

NOURNEWS – Donald Trump, who had been speaking in threatening terms about Iran since Thursday afternoon, later claimed that planned military strikes had been canceled and that a deal was close to being signed. Yet no Iranian official has confirmed his assertions, while information received suggests that, through Qatari mediation, the United States has returned to the original negotiating text.

Donald Trump, who earlier today spoke in threatening terms about pursuing hardline options against Iran, adopted a markedly different position just hours later, claiming that planned attacks and bombings against Iran had been halted and that the agreement process had entered its final stage. In the absence of any official confirmation from Tehran, this abrupt shift raises fresh questions about the realities of the diplomatic landscape rather than providing any certainty.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president claimed that talks with Iran had reached the “highest level” and that both the general framework and details of an agreement had been approved by a range of regional actors. He even spoke of an imminent announcement regarding the time and location for signing the deal. At the same time, however, he stressed that military pressure and the naval blockade would remain in place until the process was finalized, a position that only adds to the complexity and contradictions within the narrative he presented.

These developments come as some reports indicate that roughly two weeks ago, the initial draft understanding between Tehran and Washington had largely been finalized and required only a final political decision at senior levels. As the process continued, however, new demands were reportedly added by the United States, leading to a halt in deliberations and a slowdown in diplomatic momentum.

In recent weeks, amid regional security developments, the negotiation track effectively entered a period of stagnation. Beginning on Wednesday, however, a Qatari delegation sought to revive the diplomatic process by reactivating mediation channels. Some accounts suggest that at this stage Washington retreated from its additional demands and returned to the original draft text.

If this account is accurate, recent developments would be better understood not as a shift in Tehran’s position, but rather as a return by the United States to the framework that had previously been under discussion. Viewed from this perspective, Trump’s claim that “Iran backed down under pressure” appears significantly at odds with the reported realities of the negotiating process.

At the same time, some assessments indicate that, given Washington’s acceptance of Iran’s proposed text and the abandonment of subsequent amendments, there is a possibility that Tehran may revisit and reexamine the framework. Nevertheless, no official indication has yet been released regarding the final decision of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Overall, the striking contrast between Trump’s threatening rhetoric earlier today and his subsequent claim that planned attacks had been canceled and that a deal was close to being signed strengthens the possibility that the White House is managing a media narrative alongside the negotiation process itself, a narrative that has not, thus far, been confirmed by Tehran.
