In a letter addressed to the foreign ministers of countries represented on the IAEA Board of Governors, Araghchi described a US-drafted resolution against Iran as politically motivated and made in bad faith. He sent the letter as the Board is holding its quarterly June meeting in Vienna, with Iran’s nuclear program being on the agenda of talks on Wednesday. Ahead of the talks, the US prepared a resolution against Iran.
Araghchi said Washington was responsible for the current tensions and warned against any attempt to use the Board to legitimize what he called unlawful actions against Iran.
Referring to a resolution that IAEA Board of Governors adopted in June 2025, Araghchi said the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran’s safeguarded nuclear facilities less than 24 hours after its passage, resulting in the deaths of many Iranians.
The Iranian foreign minister questioned whether the agency was once again being used to justify aggression against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
He also pointed to repeated US and Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and their family members since June 2025, calling the developments unprecedented in the history of the IAEA.
According to Araghchi, such actions have had serious consequences for international law, global peace and security, the non-proliferation regime, and the implementation of IAEA safeguards.
He further criticized the US draft resolution for focusing only on the consequences of recent developments while deliberately ignoring the root causes of the current situation.
Araghchi said the decisions made by IAEA board members would affect not only Iran’s case but also the credibility, independence and future of the agency and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
