‘He sells out those who stand beside him’: Iran dismisses hostile remarks by Lebanon’s Aoun

Iran has chided Lebanese President Joseph Aoun for “selling out” those who stand beside him while remaining loyal to the enemies of Lebanon, after he criticized Iran’s “influence” in the Arab country.

In a post on X on Saturday, Baghaei endorsed earlier comments by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in which he urged Aoun to focus on Lebanon's "real foe" rather than Iran.

“He sells out those who stand beside him and invests in those who stand against him. He abandons those who supported him and backs those who put him in a difficult position,” Baghaei wrote in Arabic.

The remarks came in response to statements by Aoun during an interview with CNN, in which he alleged that Iran uses Lebanon as leverage in its negotiations with the United States.

Earlier on Saturday, Araghchi rejected the claims in a post on X, noting that Aoun’s comments ignore the real challenges facing Lebanon.

"Based on Mr. Aoun's comments, one would think it is Iran that has occupied one-fifth of Lebanon, displaced one-quarter of the Lebanese people, and is bombing his country on a daily basis," Araghchi said.

He added that if Lebanon had been a bargaining tool for Iran, Tehran and Washington would have reached an agreement long ago.

“Save Lebanon from your real foe, Mr. President,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

Aoun also claimed that Iran is treating Lebanon as leverage in its talks with Washington, saying such an approach was "unacceptable."

This came after the announcement of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement between the Lebanese government and the Tel Aviv regime.

Despite the so-called ceasefire, Israeli aggression continues unabated. The regime’s forces persist in bombing villages and towns across southern Lebanon, systematically destroying homes, public facilities, and civilian infrastructure.

Since March 2, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of 3,526 people and left thousands injured in Lebanon, displacing over one million individuals, according to the latest figures released by Lebanon's Health Ministry.
