Selecting Asian representatives from an unfinished league table, its underlying reasons

Why Iran’s selection of football representatives for Asia turned into a tangled knot

NOURNEWS – As the Asian Football Confederation’s deadline for announcing Iran’s representatives approaches, the Football Federation has finally presented its initial assessment, a decision that, although not yet final, has clarified the selection pathway for teams. The AFC’s refusal to extend the deadline has forced the federation into decision-making under highly ambiguous conditions, a move that has already sparked a wave of criticism.

Crisis management in Iranian football entered one of its most complex phases with the onset of the so-called Third Imposed War. The Premier League was suspended amid expectations that the conflict would end within a few weeks and competitions would resume after an official ceasefire. However, as threats from the US–Israeli adversary continued, the suspension persisted. Two major agendas for the Football Federation, qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the selection and introduction of Iran’s representatives for Asian competitions, were placed on hold. The national team selection process, conflicting statements regarding visa issuance for players and coaching staff, as well as threats by Trump about the safety of national players and claims by hostile media outlets, all diverted attention away from Asian competitions and the identification of Iran’s representatives.

Now, with only a few days remaining until the Asian Football Confederation’s final deadline (May 31), Iran’s Football League Organization finds itself trapped in a difficult dilemma between an “unfinished Premier League table” and the strict requirements of professional licensing.

Although the federation’s spokesperson stated last night in a television program that the selection criterion would be the current league table up to Matchweek 22, where Esteghlal and Tractor sit first and second, and Sepahan is third, the realities behind the scenes indicate significant obstacles. Reports suggest that Sepahan is facing financial issues linked to its ownership structure, while Esteghlal is dealing with delays in publishing its financial statements on the Codal system, placing it in serious conflict with AFC professional standards. This “conditional” nature of the selection has further deepened the ambiguity.

The key question now is: if any of these leading clubs fail financial eligibility checks, will lower-ranked teams (such as Gol Gohar Sirjan) be substituted? The federation spokesperson confirmed this possibility, stating that the list is conditional upon obtaining a professional license, and if any club fails to meet the required standards, the matter will become significantly more complicated.

Clash between sporting fairness and international deadlines

The biggest challenge for the League Organization is legitimizing the current ranking. The Premier League remains incomplete due to suspended matches, and many fans, particularly supporters of Persepolis, believe that relying on the current standings to allocate continental slots undermines the principles of competition and sporting justice. Announcing representatives without completing the season has placed the League Organization under a legitimacy crisis, and it appears that the management led by Baharvand, head of the League Organization, along with his colleagues, is facing one of its most difficult tests.

While the federation had hoped to negotiate an extension to resume the league after the World Cup, the AFC’s firm rejection disrupted all calculations. The federation had submitted its request in the hope of securing additional time, but received a decisive “no.” As a result, Iranian football now stands at a crossroads between “announcing representatives based on an unfinished table” and “accepting the consequences of that decision”, a choice driven by international deadlines but likely to intensify tensions within domestic football.

This decision, taken mid-season before the completion of competitions, is expected to trigger a wave of protests from competing clubs. Persepolis, Gol Gohar, Chadormalu Ardakan, and Foolad Khuzestan, all still in contention for qualification, view reliance on the Matchweek 22 standings as a disregard for their legitimate right to compete until the final whistle. From their perspective, basing decisions on an incomplete table inflicts irreparable damage on the integrity of sporting fairness.

Nevertheless, the Football Federation and League Organization find themselves in a strategic deadlock, where pressure from the AFC to announce representatives early has stripped domestic authorities of maneuvering room. Iranian football officials are effectively forced into two difficult choices: either comply with AFC timelines using a contested criterion that satisfies no one, or risk possible exclusion from Asian competitions by delaying the announcement.

Ultimately, if the current scenario is approved by the League Organization’s board and the Football Federation, Esteghlal and Tractor will prepare for participation in the Elite Champions League, while Sepahan will enter the AFC Champions League 2. However, this emergency exit from crisis does not mark the end of the story. The issue of Asian representatives has now become one of the most controversial and complex managerial decisions in recent years, a case entangled in suspended league fixtures, professional licensing requirements, AFC pressure, and widespread club protests, with the potential to carry significant legal and administrative consequences for the federation.
