Which cities are bearing the greatest pressure in the labor market?

NOURNEWS – A new JobVision report shows that following the ceasefire, a wave of job seekers has returned to the labor market, with employment competition in major cities rising by as much as 4.8 times.

Iran’s labor market, after the end of hostilities and the establishment of the ceasefire, has entered a new phase of competition among job seekers, a competition that, according to data released by JobVision, Iran’s specialized online employment and job-matching platform, has surged significantly in many major cities, signaling a rapid return of human capital to the employment cycle.

A review of the chart titled “Growth in Job Seeker Competition by City After the Ceasefire” shows that in all surveyed cities, the number of job applicants has increased at a faster pace than employers’ hiring capacity. In effect, the labor market is now facing a dual pressure: on one hand, the number of job seekers has grown, while on the other, available job opportunities have not yet reached expected levels.

Among these cities, Shiraz has recorded the highest increase in job competition. According to JobVision’s report, competition among job seekers in Shiraz has increased 4.8-fold compared to normal conditions, making it the national leader in employment competition. Analysts believe that increased labor migration, the rapid return of applicants to the job market, and limited employment opportunities are among the main drivers of this significant surge.

After Shiraz, Mashhad ranks second with a 3.5-fold increase. As one of the key economic and service hubs in eastern Iran, the city is now facing a high concentration of job applicants, with competition for available positions intensifying.

Qom and Isfahan follow, each showing a 3.4-fold increase in job competition. These two cities, home to important industrial, service, and religious labor markets, have in recent months experienced a rapid return of workforce participation in the job market.

Next is Karaj, with a threefold increase; a city that, due to its proximity to Tehran, has long absorbed part of the capital’s labor force. Tehran itself, despite its wide range of employment opportunities and high concentration of companies, has seen a 2.7-fold increase in job seeker competition, indicating that even the country’s largest labor market has not been spared from the rising wave of employment demand.

The lowest increase among the surveyed cities belongs to Tabriz, which, with a 2.4-fold rise, still shows an upward trend. Although this figure is lower than in other cities, it nonetheless reflects a noticeable increase in pressure on the employment market in the region.

Overall, this data indicates that Iran’s labor market has entered a period of intensified competition following the ceasefire, a phase in which the number of job seekers is growing far more rapidly than available employment opportunities. If this trend continues, it could influence hiring dynamics, wage levels, and even labor migration patterns between cities.
