Hidden Alignment or Performative Neutrality?

As security tensions escalate in West Asia, and following the outbreak of war and what is described as a brutal aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran since February 28, 2026, the need for neighboring countries to adopt clear and responsible positions has become more critical than ever—an approach that could help prevent further escalation.

Nournews: In recent days, remarks by Donald Trump have suggested that some Arab countries are aligning with U.S. and Israeli actions against Iran. At the same time, reports by Reuters indicate that certain regional actors are preparing for a potential intensification of the conflict.

These claims come as the region faces a concrete reality: an ongoing war that began on February 28, 2026, and whose consequences are directly affecting regional security. In such an environment, any ambiguity in the positions of regional countries could further complicate the situation and increase risks.

Iran and the Continuation of a Good-Neighbor Policy

The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently emphasized the principle of “good neighborliness” and the strengthening of relations based on mutual respect with regional countries. This approach is rooted in the belief that regional security should be ensured by regional actors themselves, and that reliance on external powers leads to instability.

During the current conflict, Iran has sought to frame its actions within the context of legitimate self-defense, limiting its responses to sources of threat—namely, the bases used by aggressors. Its effort to avoid expanding the conflict into neighboring countries’ territories reflects a responsible approach to managing the current complex situation.

Such conduct naturally creates a reciprocal expectation: that neighboring countries clarify their positions to prevent any misinterpretation regarding their role in the conflict.

Transparency as a Deterrent to Escalation

At a time when war is directly impacting regional security, transparency in political and security positions has become a strategic necessity. If the claims regarding cooperation by some countries in actions against Iran are unfounded, a clear and official denial could help contain the scope of the conflict.

Conversely, continued silence under such circumstances may be interpreted as a sign of alignment or tacit approval—an interpretation that could alter the calculations of the parties involved and contribute to further escalation.

From this perspective, transparency is not merely a political choice, but a tool for preventing the intensification of conflict and preserving relative regional stability.

A Strategic Choice for the Region’s Future

At this critical juncture, Arab countries in the region face a strategic choice. One path is to maintain ambiguity or adopt approaches that, in effect, align with external interventions—a course that could expand the conflict and increase security costs for all parties.

The alternative is to move toward strengthening region-based security and distancing themselves from any actions or perceptions of alignment in the war against Iran. This path is grounded in transparency, dialogue, and regional cooperation, and could help reduce tensions.

Within this framework, it must be noted that any perception of participation or alignment in this war may carry direct consequences for the security of regional states. Therefore, adopting clear positions and avoiding ambiguity is an urgent necessity to prevent further escalation and preserve regional stability.
