A plan to levy tolls on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz is being drafted

The head of the Parliament’s Development Commission announced that a plan is being prepared within the commission to regulate the transit corridor of the Strait of Hormuz.

Nournews: Mohammadreza Rezaei Kouchi, head of the Development Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, said in an interview about the need to organize traffic in the Strait of Hormuz: A proposal to charge tolls on vessels passing through the Strait is being developed by a group of lawmakers in order to ensure the security of the maritime corridor.

He noted that the plan aims to manage this strategic waterway, adding that decisions will be made regarding how to manage, supervise, and provide services in the Strait.

Regarding the main components of the plan, he said: Based on the proposal currently being drafted in the Development Commission, vessel traffic along this route will be monitored by Iran, and tolls will be collected from transiting ships within a legal framework in exchange for services, security provision, and route management.

Rezaei emphasized that no clear and comprehensive law has yet been passed on how to manage, supervise, and provide services in this Strait. He added that the Strait of Hormuz is, in fact, a key maritime corridor that passes through Iran’s territorial domain, and naturally, its supervision, traffic control, and security provision should be carried out under the authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
