Baqaei made the remarks during his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday while responding to IRNA’s question about a text message between French President Emmanuel Macron and his US counterpart Donald Trump, which the latter made public a week ago. In the message, Macron told Trump that they “can do great things on Iran.”
“Politics is not conducted through the exchange of private text messages, especially when there is no guarantee they will remain confidential. Rather, countries must act responsibly in response to international developments and avoid squandering their credibility,” the spokesperson said.
He added that the Iranian nation is well aware that the era in which extra-regional powers speak about other countries in this manner is now over.
Iran’s response to aggressors will be comprehensive
Baqaei also commented on US and Israeli threats of military action against Iran, saying that the Islamic Republic has been facing a hybrid war since the 12-day conflict in June last year.
He said that Iran relies on its own capabilities and past experiences, including the June confrontation, stressing that the country is more powerful than before and will certainly respond to any act of aggression with a comprehensive response that will make aggressors regret their actions.
Regional countries share the same concerns, he said, noting that they are well aware Iran is not the only potential target of insecurity in the region, as instability would spread to other countries.
Basically, any country that respects peace and international law should adopt a clear stance against US threats, the spokesperson added.
Iran’s defense cooperation with China, Russia
The Islamic Republic’s ties with Russia and China are long-standing and based on mutual respect and interests, the spokesperson said, stressing that Iran’s defense cooperation with the two countries also enjoys a long record.
Baqaei made the remarks while responding to a question about whether Iran has cooperated with Russia and China on defense issues amid US threats that have intensified since the 12-day war launched by Israel in June 2025.
He said Iran holds key agreements with both China and Russia, which include defense cooperation that will certainly continue. He added that China and Russia are important members of the UN Security Council and are mindful of the body’s responsibilities regarding international peace and security.
Tehran has maintained close contacts with Moscow and Beijing over recent developments as well, he added.
US double standards on human rights
The Iranian diplomat criticized the United States for what he described as double standards in its approach to human rights at home and abroad.
He said US police have cracked down on protesters, including children, in recent weeks, while the American administration has threatened Iran over peaceful protests that later turned violent.
“What is happening in American cities is a clear violation of human rights, and this country, which claims to defend human rights in other countries, should first be concerned about its internal situation and the behavior of its police toward protesters,” Baqaei said.
Iran committed to its IAEA obligations
Further in his press briefing, the spokesperson dismissed remarks by Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), suggesting that Iran should engage with the agency or risk being declared non-compliant.
Baqaei said Iran has remained committed to its obligations, while Grossi himself has, on various occasions, failed to make efforts fruitful.
‘Uncalculated’ IRGC designation
Commenting on a move by the European Parliament (EP) to urge countries to place the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on their terrorist lists, Baqaei described the measure as uncalculated from both political and logical perspectives, stressing that it would have serious consequences.
The IRGC is part of the Iranian Armed Forces and has played a key role in defeating the Daesh terrorist group, he said, adding that Iran considers it its right to reciprocate the EP’s “shallow and irrational” action, taken to please the United States and Israel.
If any country decides, without justification, to designate an official part of another country’s armed forces as a terrorist organization, it would embolden terrorist groups and could lead to severe consequences for the region, he noted.
UNHRC resolution against Iran
A resolution adopted last week at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva created divisions within the international community, as nearly half of the council’s members—22 countries—either abstained from voting or rejected an anti-Iran resolution drafted by Germany and Britain over alleged human rights violations in Iran, Baqaei said.
He added that Iran appreciates all countries that voted against the resolution as well as those that abstained, demonstrating their lack of support for what he described as the politicized approach adopted by Western countries, Baqaei said.
Threat of extremism resurgence
On an agreement between Iraq and the US to transfer imprisoned Daesh terrorists to Syria, the spokesperson said that Iran respects Iraqi decisions and believes that this specific decision was made on considerations to protect the Arab country’s security.
However, he added, Iran is also concerned about potential new security challenges imposed by foreign powers, including the US. Baqaei called on regional countries to be cautious that decisions by third parties do not lead to the resurgence of terrorism and extremism in the region.
Gaza ‘Board of Peace’
Baqaei said that Iran rejects any plan that affects or delays Palestinians’ right to self-determination, considering it unfruitful.
He also said that any institution, which relies on a sole person or government, would not be able to serve the international community.
No message from Pezeshkian to Trump
Baqaei dismissed media reports that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has sent a message to his American counterpart Donald Trump via Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The spokesperson criticized some media outlets for sharing reports made by Israeli media with the aim of waging psychological warfare.
He also said that the latest report reveals Israel’s hostility toward diplomacy.
US seeking global dictatorship
On media reports that the US has threatened Iraq over Iran and also threatened Latin American countries to blacklist the IRGC, Baqaei said that such actions are aimed at creating a global dictatorship so that all countries move in line with America’s interests.
