In a statement on Saturday, Jagan Chapagain said he was "deeply saddened" by the killing of Amir Ali Latifi, and the injury of five other of his colleagues who were on duty in Gilan Province on January 10, 2026.
He expressed his "deepest condolences" to the victim's family, loved ones, and all other colleagues at the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) on behalf of the IFRC.
The IFRC chief said that the Geneva-based organization stands by the IRCS and all medical and humanitarian workers who are providing life-saving assistance in Iran in difficult circumstances.
Emphasizing that humanitarian workers must be supported and protected, Chapagain said the IFRC is concerned about the consequences of the recent unrest for the Iranian people and is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the IRCS.
On January 10, foreign-backed terrorists targeted public and private property, including ambulances, fire brigades and relief vehicles. One such attack in Gilan province, resulted in the martyrdom of one IRCS worker and injury of five others.
