“A new definition of diplomacy by the US: We are ready for a meaningful negotiation but forget about your internationally recognized rights,” Araghchi mocked the US claim on diplomacy in a post on his social media platform X on Wednesday.
"This is dictation and not negotiation, let alone a meaningful one," he further said, in response to remarks made by Morgan Ortagus during the UN Security Council meeting on Iran.
The top diplomat pointed out that the world had witnessed Iran’s approach to negotiations in the midst of which, the US “opted to open fire on our people and torpedoed diplomacy."
"We did what we always do: resist and confront those who assault us, and make sure they regret it," Araghchi said, referring to Iran's response to US aggression. "Extending the hand of diplomacy does not entail sending bombers and then crow about their failure as a success."
He concluded his post by advising the US and its leadership to "try real and honest diplomacy instead of attempting to deceive the world,"
On Tuesday, Ortagus said at a UN Security Council meeting that President Trump was extending a hand of diplomacy toward Iran and is ready for formal negotiations, provided Tehran completely abandons uranium enrichment.
In response, Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Amir-Saeid Iravani said that the US insistence on a so-called zero-enrichment policy is entirely inconsistent with the rights to which Iran is entitled as a member of the NPT.
