Chabahar gateway for Iran-Afghanistan trade, transit: Free zone chief

CEO of the Chabahar Free Zone Organization (CFZO ) Mohammad Saeed Arbabi has highlighted Chabahar’s unique position as Iran’s only oceanic port capable of becoming the primary gateway for trade and transit between Iran and Afghanistan.

In an exclusive interview with IRNA on Wednesday, Arbabi emphasized that the necessary infrastructure for investment and logistical collaboration between the two countries has been established.

He mentioned recent meetings with ambassadors from various countries, including a significant dialogue with Afghan Ambassador to Iran Fazl Mohammad Haqqani. These discussions focused on strengthening economic, trade, and transit relations between the neighboring nations, the CFZO chairman added.

He stated that Chabahar, particularly its free trade and industrial zone, offers the most economical entry point for goods entering Afghanistan, and that its geographic location provides the shortest access for Afghanistan to open waters.

Highlighting the deep historical, cultural, and social ties between Iran and Afghanistan, Arbabi noted that approximately 1,700 Afghans and their families currently reside in Chabahar. He stressed the importance of treating Afghan traders equally and prioritizing support for Afghan investors.

To streamline cooperative efforts, a joint economic committee will be established to regularly address trade, investment, and logistical issues, he noted. Arbabi mentioned that the economic advantages of the Chabahar route include reduced transportation and transit costs.

With upcoming developments like the Chabahar-Zahidan railway and enhanced port facilities, Arbabi said that Chabahar is poised to play a crucial role in boosting bilateral trade and addressing logistical challenges between Iran and Afghanistan.
