Iranian, Russian lawmakers discuss bilateral cooperation amid Western pressure

Iranian and Russian parliamentarians have discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing that such collaboration would help promote peace in the region and beyond amid unilateral policies pursued by Western governments.

The talks were held on Tuesday in Moscow, where an Iranian delegation led by Ebrahim Azizi, Chairperson of Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, attended the 18th Meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Azizi said Iran maintains a strategic view toward the East, particularly toward the “friendly and allied” nation of Russia. He noted that bilateral ties have steadily grown over recent years despite international developments and amid shared threats.

“Today, the security of our countries is intertwined, and the West’s hostility and its sanctions against our nations have increased the importance of expanding bilateral relations,” the Iranian lawmaker said.

He stressed that Iran and Russia should not allow the regions surrounding them to be shaped by destabilizing geopolitical changes. “We expect the Russian side to take steps to prevent such developments in the Caucasus and Central Asia,” he added.

Azizi also emphasized that Tehran and Moscow should not limit their cooperation to the security and political spheres.

Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Duma Committee on International Affairs, agreed that Iran and Russia must advance their cooperation across all fields.

“The cooperation between Iran and Russia is strengthening in a way that benefits peace and stability in the region and the world,” he said.

He referred to the Iran–Russia Strategic Partnership Agreement, which came into force in October, describing it as a tool that enables both countries to neutralize Western-imposed sanctions.

Andrey Valeryevich Kartapolov, Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, also attended the meeting. He said Tehran–Moscow relations are based on mutual respect and interests and are expanding under the framework of their partnership agreement.

He described the West as the main adversary of both Russia and Iran, which he said is threatening the existence and sovereignty of the two nations. Under such circumstances, he added, Russia and Iran must deepen their engagement to help maintain stability in various parts of the world.
