Azerbaijan voices readiness to expand ties with Iran

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed satisfaction with the current trajectory of relations with Iran, reaffirming his country's readiness to expand bilateral ties.

Aliyev was speaking during a meeting with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Baku on Monday, which focused on advancing political engagement and managing bilateral issues.

Aliyev offered greetings to President Masoud Pezeshkian and described his recent trip to Baku as “a historic visit” that played a key role in improving mutual understanding and advancing relations.

He said Baku is ready to “use all existing capacities to expand relations.”

For his part, Araghchi conveyed Pezeshkian’s “warm greetings” to Aliyev and highlighted the “deep and longstanding bonds between the two nations,” stressing Iran’s determination to strengthen and broaden cooperation with Azerbaijan “in all areas of mutual interest.”

He underscored the importance of adopting a long-term approach in neighborly relations and said sustained diplomatic consultations are essential for “correcting misunderstandings and managing bilateral issues.”

During the meeting, Araghchi also outlined Iran’s views on recent regional developments as the two sides exchanged views on political interaction, neighborhood issues, and mechanisms for managing relations between the neighboring states.

Araghchi traveled to Azerbaijan on Sunday as part of an official visit to boost Tehran–Baku relations.

Speaking at a press briefing earlier that day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei highlighted the significance of the visit, describing relations between Iran and Azerbaijan as very important.

Over the past three decades, relations between the two countries have been shaped by shared heritage and geographical proximity, forming a multi-layered partnership since Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991.
