Iran commemorates 1971 retaking of Trio Islands in Persian Gulf

Iranian Army commanders attended a ceremony on Sunday to commemorate the 1971 retaking of three islands in the Persian Gulf, which marked the end of Britain’s 70‑year occupation of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb.

The ceremony was held in southern Tehran at the tombs of the soldiers who lost their lives retaking the islands on the 53rd anniversary of the operation.

Iran commemorates the day of the operation each year as the National Day of the Persian Gulf Trio Islands.

The UAE has long laid claim to the three Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf, a claim Iran has firmly rejected, insisting that the islands are an inseparable part of its territory.

The islands have historically been part of Iran, a fact corroborated by numerous historical, legal, and geographical documents from both Iran and other parts of the world.
