US, Europe need to reconsider positions for a new deal with Iran: Russian analyst

Director of Moscow-based Center for Energy and Security Studies Anton Khlopkov has urged Washington and Europe to reconsider their positions to achieve a new agreement with Iran.

Speaking in an interview with Russia's TASS news agency, Khlopkov said finding new approaches is essential for a long-term settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue. Still, the US and European countries are currently unwilling to seek a solution, he added.

Cooperation between Russia, China, and Iran is a key element in resolving the dispute surrounding Iran's nuclear issue and shaping long-term solutions, he added.

Earlier on Monday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, reaffirmed Iran’s continued cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, while rejecting the activation of the so-called snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against the country.

He said the IAEA must uphold its impartiality and avoid steps that could further heighten tensions.

He also underscored the importance of dialogue and cooperation among regional countries, referring to his recent consultations with his regional counterparts.

Lavrov, in turn, welcomed Iran’s regional diplomacy and signaled Moscow’s readiness for closer cooperation with Tehran.
