Iran envoy lauds successful Iraqi elections as milestone for democracy

Iran's ambassador to Baghdad Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadeq has congratulated the Iraqi government and people on the successful parliamentary elections, describing it as a pivotal step in strengthening democracy and stability in the Arab country.

In a post on X Tuesday, Al-e Saedq emphasized that the elections reflect the will of the Iraqi people and their national sovereignty.

The ambassador also wished for a bright and prosperous future for the people and government of Iraq.

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced that voter turnout exceeded 56%, with over 12 million out of 21 million eligible voters participating. This marks a significant increase from the 41% turnout in the previous elections in 2021, indicating growing public trust in the political process. The commission also reported a 77% participation rate among internally displaced persons who cast ballots in special voting on Sunday, showcasing the commitment of all Iraqi citizens to engage in the democratic process.

The parliamentary elections, held also on Tuesday through public voting, are crucial as they not only elect 329 members of parliament but also determine the president in the first session. The newly elected president will appoint a prime minister from the largest parliamentary faction to form the government.

Initial election results are expected to be announced by the commission on November 12.
