Iran’s envoy emphasizes need for stronger ties with Russia: Lawmaker

Iran's ambassador to Russia says Moscow and Tehran are serious about strengthening strategic partnership and enhancing relations in all fields, according to a senior lawmaker.

Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesperson for the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament, made the remarks on Monday following a session of the committee, during which Kazem Jalali, Iran’s envoy in Moscow, had presented a report to members and answered their questions.

According to him, the Iranian envoy briefed the commission on the status of relations between Iran and Russia, especially in recent months.

Jalali called for the need of proper relations with Russia, which is a large and powerful neighbor of Iran, as well as a partner to fight unilateralism of Western powers.

Citing comments from the meeting, Rezaei said the ambassador also referred to Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and BRICS, as well as the country’s free trade agreement with Eurasian member states, calling them valuable opportunities for developing economic relations with Russia to another level.

On uranium enrichment, Jalali told the committee that Russia supported the positions of the Islamic Republic on the nuclear issue and that Moscow was not aware of the US-backed Israeli plan to attack Iran.

Elsewhere in his presentation, the ambassador said Tehran had not requested to buy the S-400 air-defense system from Russia but added that President Masoud Pezeshkian is serious about developing relations with Russia and is personally following up on some issues.
