Iran’s top security body will review any IAEA request for talks: Larijani

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani says the body will review any request by the International Atomic Energy Agency () for negotiations, as a recent European bid to reinstate sanctions unraveled Tehran’s cooperation agreement with the UN nuclear watchdog.

He made the remarks after a meeting with Iraq’s National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Monday, less than a month after the conclusion of the so-called snapback process initiated by the UK, Germany, and France aimed at restoring all UN Security Council sanctions against Iran previously lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran had earlier warned that the European trio’s move would render null and void the agreement signed with the in Egypt’s Cairo on September 9 on practical modalities to resume cooperation

Asked by reporters whether Iran- talks will take place, Larijani said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi “announced after the Cairo summit that if the snapback mechanism is invoked, negotiations will be considered null and void.”

“If the agency submits a request on this matter, it must be reviewed by the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council,” he added.

Iran suspended all cooperation with the following June’s Israeli-US aggression against the country, citing the agency’s politically motivated resolutions and its failure to condemn the terrorist assault.

Regarding Director General Rafael Grossi’s position on Iran, Larijani said, “Grossi has done his part, and his reports will no longer have any impact.”

Meanwhile, he said Iran believes that the Europeans “misused" the snapback and carried out an “unlawful act” despite Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) over the past 10 years.

Today, he emphasized, China and Russia do not accept the re-imposition of anti-Iran sanctions as UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the JCPOA, has terminated.

He also described Araji’s visit to Iran as important, hoping that it would deepen relations between the two neighboring countries.

He further thanked Iraq for its stance during the 12-day war on Iran, and hailed Baghdad’s position in international forums concerning political issues.

Israel and the US misused Iraqi territory during their aggression against Iran, he said. “Our friends in Iraq are following up on this matter.”

“Iraq is an independent country that has preserved its independence for years after the dictatorship, but the United States and the Zionist regime do not allow this independence to be maintained.”

Araji, for his part, said Iraq has repeatedly emphasized that it will not allow its airspace to be used against Iran, and that it will not permit any party or group to threaten Iran’s security through Iraqi territory.

Iran’s security is part of Iraq’s security, he noted, warning that another war would benefit no one in the region.

The Iraqi official said Iraq opposes the use of sanctions as a tool and puts a premium on dialogue and diplomacy.

Every country in the world has the right to use peaceful nuclear energy, and any dispute, including Iran’s nuclear issue, must be resolved through dialogue, not coercion, he said.
