Araghchi: The West’s excessive demands led the negotiations to a deadlock

Nournews: Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, on the sidelines of a meeting with ambassadors and representatives of foreign countries residing in Tehran, that the Western countries’ rejection of Iran’s fair proposals due to their excessive demands has brought the negotiations to a dead end. He added that the Cairo Agreement can no longer serve as the basis for Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Araghchi said: “Today we held a briefing session for the ambassadors to explain the latest discussions related to New York. It was also necessary to provide clarifications about the snapback issue.”

He continued: “All countries needed to understand the legitimacy of Iran’s position — how the Western side created the current situation, and how Iran worked hard to achieve a fair and balanced negotiated solution. But it was the Western countries that said no because of their excessive demands.”

No solution other than diplomacy

Regarding the New York negotiations, Araghchi stated: “It has been proven once again that there is no solution other than a diplomatic one regarding Iran’s nuclear program. For years, they made military threats and triggered the snapback mechanism, but our response was clear: just as military action was not a solution, snapback cannot be one either. The three European countries thought they had a leverage in snapback; now they have used it and seen the result — it has solved nothing.”

Europe’s role has faded

He added: “Diplomacy never ends, but the question is how and with whom it continues. The three European countries have certainly diminished their own role and undermined the justification for continuing talks. They will have a smaller role in any future negotiated solution.”

No hidden conditions; Talks were only nuclear

Regarding the alleged conditions for negotiations, the foreign minister said: “None of those so-called conditions were ever stated officially. Our talks were solely focused on the nuclear issue. Nothing beyond that was ever discussed. Our proposals were entirely clear, and we believe that if attention had been paid to them, reaching a negotiated solution would not have been out of reach. Even now, that remains possible — if they come to the table in good faith for talks that bring mutual benefit.”

He added: “The Foreign Ministry will continue its efforts to advance diplomacy. We will keep working, but given the new circumstances, the negotiations will not be the same as before.”

Cairo Agreement no longer a basis for cooperation with the IAEA

Speaking about the future of Iran’s understanding with the IAEA reached in Cairo, Araghchi said: “We signed an agreement with the Agency on a new form of cooperation. The reason was clear: given the recent attacks, cooperation could no longer continue as before. Because of the existing security and safety concerns, a new framework had to be defined.”

He added: “Now, the Cairo Agreement can no longer serve as the basis for our cooperation with the Agency. The snapback mechanism has changed everything. We are facing new circumstances and must make new decisions. The Cairo Agreement is no longer effective.”

Iran will not give up its rights

Araghchi stressed: “To demonstrate our goodwill, Iran has walked every path it needed to walk. We cooperated with the Agency and presented fair proposals. The Western side has no excuse to claim that Iran avoided negotiations. There is no justified reason for activating the snapback mechanism. Iran’s legitimacy has been fully proven.”

He concluded: “Iran has shown through action that its only goal is to secure its legitimate rights, and at the same time, we are ready for any reasonable solution. The last time an attack occurred, over 120 countries around the world condemned it because Iran acted wisely. Today again, it has been shown that Iran is a smart actor and will never relinquish its rights.”
