Iran hopes UNSC supports China-Russia initiative on sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister expressed hope that UNSC members would support the China-Russia draft resolution to prevent the snapback mechanism.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held talks with Tanja Fajon, Slovenia’s Foreign Minister, whose country currently serves as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The two ministers discussed bilateral relations between Tehran and Ljubljana as well as international developments.

Araghchi praised Slovenia’s principled stance against the genocide in Gaza and the Israeli regime’s aggression in the region, emphasizing the need for collective international action to stop such crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories and to prosecute and punish those responsible.

Referring to Iran’s comprehensive efforts to prevent escalation regarding its nuclear file, the Iranian foreign minister described the move by the three European countries to restore previously terminated UN Security Council resolutions against Iran as unjustified and irresponsible. He said the initiative was designed in line with the confrontational and unlawful approach of the United States and amounted to a serious disruption of diplomacy.

He also expressed hope that UN Security Council member states, mindful of the history of Iran’s nuclear issue and the unfair conduct of the United States and its Western partners over the past two decades, would vote in favor of the draft resolution proposed by China and Russia, presented as an initiative to prevent the snapback mechanism.
