Definitive solution possible; mistrust of Iran nuclear program rooted in misunderstanding, propaganda: Pres.

President Masoud Pezeshkian says a “definitive solution” to the standoff between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program is “within reach” if all parties respect each other’s rights and interests and adhere to the principle of fairness.

The chief executive made the remarks in a post on X, former Twitter, on Wednesday, commenting on his earlier meeting with French counterpart Emanuel Macron on the sidelines of the 80th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The former described the conversation as “candid and detailed, during which we exchanged views and clearly outlined solutions that could both address Europe’s concerns and safeguard Iran’s interests.”

The president reiterated the absence of any intention whatsoever on the part of the Islamic Republic to pursue nuclear weapons, saying the country is ready to engage with European parties within an acceptable framework regarding its peaceful nuclear energy program.

Both officials expressed hope that by resolving outstanding issues, groundwork could be laid for expansion of their ties and cooperation.

Macron, for his part, referred to France’s participation in talks aimed at resolving existing differences, stressing the need for whatever issue to be taken care of through dialogue.

‘Talks meaningless if ‘snapback’ activated’

Also on Wednesday, Pezeshkian sat down with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, noting that “dialogue will lose its meaning” upon potential activation of the so-called “snapback” mechanism that would restore the United Nations Security Council’s sanctions against Iran.

The mechanism has been featured in Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world countries, including the UK, France, and Germany.

The trio triggered the mechanism in August, citing alleged concerns about the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

As well as the countries, the United States and the Israeli regime have been broadcasting such allegations for long, despite the absence of any proof provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has subjected Iran to its most intrusive inspections in the nuclear watchdog’s history.

While reiterating their allegations, the Western allies have continuously dismissed any criticism of their own non-commitment to the nuclear agreement.

Those instances of violation include the US’s illegal and unilateral withdrawal from the accord  in 2018 and the European troika’s suspending their business dealings with Tehran under pressure from Washington.

Pezeshkian regretted that the Western mistrust of Iran’s nuclear activities stemmed partly from misunderstanding and partly from false propaganda disseminated by the Israeli regime.

He advised the Western states to rather demonstrate their adherence to their commitments, noting that the situation at hand had arisen from their failure to do so.

The Norwegian premier, however, said the West sought to resolve existing differences.

He said enactment of the “snapback” mechanism could be avoided if all parties focused on efforts aimed at finding solutions that could build understanding and address the issues at hand.

‘Sanctions unwelcome, but not end of the line’

Pezeshkian also met with anti-war activists in New York, saying that, although, re-imposition of the Security Council’s sanctions was an unwelcome prospect, the coercive measures did not signal “the end of the road.”

“Iran will never submit to them,” he said, referring to the bans, and adding that the Islamic Republic “will find the means of exiting any [unwelcome] situation.”

The official, meanwhile, stressed that domineering powers would commit every form of aggression, yet label any act of resistance against such violations as “terrorism.”

Iran, however, seeks peace and tranquility at the same time as it refuses to bow to coercion, Pezeshkian concluded.
