Iran, Russia to sign deals on building new nuclear power plants: Nuclear chief

The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says Tehran and Moscow will sign agreements, during his visit to Russia, on the construction of more nuclear power plants in the country.

Mohammad Eslami arrived in the Russian capital on Monday at the head of a delegation to hold meetings with the country’s officials and take part in events, which will be held on the occasion of the World Atomic Week in Moscow from September 25 to 29.

"The contract between the governments of the two countries envisages the construction of eight nuclear power plants by Russia, four of which are in [Iranian city of] Bushehr,” Eslami told reporters upon his arrival.

According to the contract, he added, Iran had to notify the Russian side about the construction of the remaining power plants.

The Iranian nuclear chief noted that the negotiations and necessary studies for the implementation of the second part of the contract have been conducted and the location for the construction of the power plants has been chosen, prepared, and equipped.

After the agreement is concluded by the end of the week, the operational phase for designing, engineering, and further actions will automatically begin, he added.

Prospect of Iran-IAEA cooperation

In response to a question about the prospect of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Eslami said Tehran has always emphasized that the E3 group of Britain, France and Germany should not further damage the reputation of the United Nations and international organizations.

The European troika should allow world bodies to fulfill their duties in a just and professional manner within the framework of regulations, he added.

The Iranian vice president warned that as long as these countries continue their behavior, peace will not be established in the world since their performance runs counter to laws and regulations.

He emphasized that the UN nuclear agency’s refusal to condemn the US-Israeli attacks in June on three Iranian nuclear facilities, which were under the IAEA inspection, exposes a "destructive influence runs deep in the Agency."

Eslami reiterated Iran’s compliance with the IAEA's safeguard agreement and said the country would continue its peaceful nuclear activities.

On June 13, Israel launched an unprovoked war against Iran, assassinating many high-ranking military commanders, nuclear scientists, and ordinary civilians.

More than a week later, the United States also entered the war by bombing three Iranian nuclear sites in a grave violation of the United Nations Charter, international law, and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

On Friday, the 15-member Security Council failed to adopt a resolution that would have prevented the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran after the E3 triggered the "snapback" mechanism, accusing Tehran of failing to comply with the 2015 deal, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran rejected the "illegitimate" move by the European troika, pointing out that the United States had already pulled out of the deal. Tehran also accused the European trio of siding with illegal sanctions instead of honoring their own commitments.
