Introduction to Tourist Attractions of Iranian Cities

Birjand is the capital of South Khorasan Province and one of the oldest cities in eastern Iran, with a population of about 200,000. It sits at an elevation of approximately 1,491 meters (4,892 feet) above sea level. The city is located in a mountainous, semi-desert region and has a hot, dry climate in the summer and a cold but relatively mild climate in the winter.

Throughout history, especially during the Safavid and Qajar eras, Birjand played an important role in trade in eastern Iran and in connections with India. It has also been known as one of the cultural and scientific centers of South Khorasan. Its historical attractions include the Kolah Farangi Citadel (Kolah Farangi Arg), Shokatiyeh School (one of the oldest modern schools in Iran), Birjand Castle, and the Akbarieh Garden, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
