Global Reactions to Iran's Suspension of Cooperation with IAEA

NOURNEWS – Iran’s decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency () has triggered a wave of international responses. While Europe and the United States warn of the growing risk of diplomatic failure, Russia and China continue to advocate for negotiated solutions, and the has described the move as a “severe blow” to the global monitoring system.

Immediately after the Iranian parliament approved the law suspending cooperation with the , the three European powers—France, Germany, and the United Kingdom (collectively known as the E3)—issued a strongly worded statement condemning the decision as a serious threat to efforts to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

France, Germany, and the UK warned that if Iran continues down this path, it could destroy the remaining opportunity for diplomacy. They urged Tehran to swiftly return to full cooperation with the Agency. In separate remarks, German officials emphasized that now, more than ever, diplomacy must be pursued.

 

US: Concerned but Still Open to Talks

US President Donald Trump, referencing recent developments in the region, stated, “We have scored a major victory against Iran’s military program,” while confirming that U.S. and Iranian officials are scheduled to resume talks next week.

American envoys and representatives have repeatedly called on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reiterated Washington’s commitment to seeking a diplomatic resolution.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the , described Iran’s move as a significant setback to the international monitoring system.

Warning of the consequences of the decision, Grossi reminded that under Iran’s obligations within the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), inspections must continue.

He stressed that suspending cooperation could severely reduce transparency around Iran’s nuclear program and potentially spark a new international crisis.

 

Russia: Recognizes Iran’s Rights, Urges Continued Diplomacy

Russia took a more neutral stance, recognizing Iran’s right to a peaceful nuclear program while urging continued cooperation with the .

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Iran’s decision should not be interpreted as a total halt to oversight and insisted that dialogue channels must remain open.

Moscow is working to prevent the issue from escalating into a global crisis and underscored the need for a negotiated resolution.

 

China: Rejects Pressure, Calls for Dialogue

China voiced support for Iran, opposing political pressure and sanctions, and stressed that the only viable solution to the current crisis is for all parties to return to the negotiating table.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said Beijing remains committed to preserving the JCPOA and reducing tensions, and urged all parties to refrain from provocative actions.

China also proposed a new diplomatic initiative, reaffirming its role as an active mediator in the process.

 

United Nations: Support for Transparency and Dialogue

UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed the de-escalation of tensions on the ground between Iran and Israel, and stressed the need for all parties to recommit to their obligations.

Guterres expressed concern over Iran’s decision to scale back cooperation with the and pledged the UN’s full support for the Agency’s efforts to follow up on the matter.

He reiterated that the only acceptable path forward is continued dialogue and the avoidance of any provocative actions.
