Iran, UK Discuss Vienna Talks on JCPOA, Regional Issues

In a telephone conversation with her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian on Monday, UK Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss expounded on London’s views about the ongoing negotiations in Vienna on the revival of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

NOURNEWS – Senior diplomats from Iran and the UK talked about a range of issues at a telephone conversation, including the Vienna talks on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, the relations between Tehran and London, and the situation in Afghanistan and Yemen.

She also noted that growing relations between the UK and Iran would serve the interests of the two countries, hoping that her country would soon settle its outstanding debts to Iran.

Highlighting the cooperation between the UK and the United Nations to help the Afghan people, Truss praised Iran for its influential role and cooperation in this regard.

For his part, Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian said the course of relations between Tehran and London is positive, touching on the visit that Iran’s vice president paid to the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference in 2021 and the joint webinars that the Iranian and British parliamentary friendship groups have held in the past.

The Vienna negotiations are approaching a major and sensitive stage, the top Iranian diplomat noted, stressing the need for the other parties to act seriously and responsibly.

Amirabdollahian said Iran’s “logical attitude and initiatives” have helped the JCPOA talks to reach the current stage, saying it is necessary to build consensus among all negotiating parties about a single text and to fulfill Iran’s legitimate demands.

Deploring the critical humanitarian situation in Yemen and Afghanistan, he explicated Iran’s stances on Afghanistan, reiterated the need for the formation of an inclusive Afghan government, and called for immediate assistance from the international community for the Afghan people.

He finally pointed to the dire humanitarian conditions in Yemen, expressing hope that the UK would fulfill its duties in order to terminate the humanitarian catastrophe in the Arab country caused by years of war and foreign aggression.
