Antonio Guterres' request to resolve disputes over the Ennahda Dam

The UN Secretary-General called for efforts to resolve disputes over the construction of the Ennahda Dam in Ethiopia.

NOURNEWS- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement on Wednesday that the organization encouraged the three countries of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to pursue efforts to resolve the remaining disputes over the construction of the Ennahda Dam in a peaceful manner.

"We have seen progress in the negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan," Guterres said.

The UN Secretary-General also called on all parties to pursue a friendly agreement that will bring many benefits to all parties.

The UN Secretary-General's statement came hours after Egypt and Sudan held a video conference to discuss developments in the Ennahda Dam case.

According to the original catchment plan, the dam was supposed to be operational in 2017, but significant disputes with Egypt and Sudan have delayed its construction until 2020 and the catchment by 2022.

The three countries of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia signed an agreement in March 2015 for fair use of the Nile.

The Ennahda Dam is being built on the Nile River in Ethiopia, 40 km from the Sudanese border.

Construction of the dam began in 2011 and is expected to be completed in 2020 and completed by 2022.
