NOURNEWS - Iran’s aluminum production in the last Iranian year (ended March 20, 2021) rose by 61 percent as compared to the previous year's corresponding period, a report by the country’s state-run metals and mining conglomerate IMIDRO said.
"The total output in four major aluminum smelters in Iran had reached 0.4468 million tons, up from 0.2783 million tons reported for the year to March 2020," IMIDRO reported.
It pointed out that the Iranian Aluminium Company (IRALCO) had the highest share of production at 185,000 tons. It was followed by Al Mahdi, Iran’s largest aluminum smelter on the Persian Gulf which includes Hormozal smelter, at 165,000 tons.
Production at Salco, a smelter set up in late 2019 in Southern Iran, topped 72,100 tons while Iran Alumina Company churned out 25,400 tons, the IMIDRO figures showed.
Iran has seen increased activity in its metals and mining sector since the United States imposed sanctions on the country’s crude exports in 2018.
Reports suggest that exports of metals have been responsible for a significant portion of the government’s hard currency revenues in recent years.
Experts maintain that reinforcement of Iran’s metals and mining sector would diminish the government’s excessive dependence on crude revenues while it would boost jobs and lead to more manufacturing activity in the country.
In a relevant development in February, a report said that Iran had produced 65 percent more aluminum in 10 months (March 20, 2020- January 19, 2021).
The total production for unwrought aluminum in four major smelters in Iran had reached 364,783 metric tons in the mentioned period, the report said, noting that the figure shows a 65% rise compared to the same period last year.
“Unwrought aluminum output topped 39,000 tons in the single month to January 19, a growth of 58 percent year on year,” it added.
