The captain of the Shahrekord ship narrates the terrorist attack on this merchant vessel

As a seafarer and a ship captain, I argue that, under maritime law and international custom, attacking merchant ships passing unharmed in international waters is not justifiable, but creates a serious insecurity that endangers trade and the global economy.

NOURNEWS - The container ship "Iran Shahrekord", which belongs to the Shipping Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran, caught fire on Wednesday, March 11, on its way from Iran to Europe in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea due to an explosive object.

Earlier, a member of the technical team investigating the effects of the attack on the Iran Shahrekord merchant ship told Nournews that the Zionist regime was involved in this terrorist act as a very strong possibility.

The captain of the Shahrekord ship also explained more details about this terrorist incident in an interview with Nournews.

The captain of the container Iran Shahrekord ship stated: On Wednesday, March 11, at 6 o'clock local time in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea at 33 degrees and 15.9 north and 33 degrees and 36.5 east, about 75 miles from the shores of the Zionist regime, we were on our way when an explosive object hit the ship.

He added: "The explosion occurred with terrible noises that were heard from the deck at the location of the front containers and a few seconds apart, and as a result, the fire ignited in the exploded containers."

The captain of the Shahrekord ship stated: According to the report of the first officer of the ship who was in the command bridge at the time of the accident, between 5:15 and 5:30 and about half an hour before the accident, the ship's positioning device (GPS) was out of work for 15 minutes. It fell, but at the time of the accident everything was normal.

He noted: "Immediately after the accident, the fire was completely contained by the efforts of the ship's crew, and according to the order of the Emergency Response Committee, we immediately changed our route to the port of Banias in Syria."

The captain of Shahrekord ship added: the security personnel and technical forces and divers have thoroughly inspected the condition of the ship, and the necessary measures have been taken to carry out the required repairs and ensure the complete safety of the vessel.

He added: "According to the announcement of the technical teams responsible for repairing the damaged parts, the reconstruction and safety of the ship will take about 14 days, and then we will move to the port of Valencia in Spain according to the previous plan."

The captain of Shahrekord ship stated in the end: As a sailor and a ship captain, I emphasize that, according to maritime law and international custom, attacking merchant ships that pass safely in international waters is not only unjustified but also creates dangerous insecurity. It will pose a serious threat to global trade and the economy, and international organizations overseeing merchant shipping need to address such evils urgently and prevent their continuation.
