Afghanistan and Taliban non-compliance with commitments

The Secretary of Defense accused both the Taliban and the Afghan government of failing to comply with their commitments under the February agreement.

NOURNEWS- Secretary of Defense Mark Spur says the failure of the Taliban and the Afghan government to adhere to the peace agreement signed in February has strained the fragile political agreement.

He also claimed that the only solution to the tensions was for Kabul and the Taliban to work together to improve the terms of the agreement.

According to some reports, the Taliban have carried out more than 4,500 attacks on Afghan forces in the past 45 days, but the United States claims that it is committed to the gradual withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan under the agreement.

If true, the number of US troops leaving Afghanistan by the summer should reach 8,600.

As part of the Washington-Taliban agreement, the level of violence was to be reduced and dialogue between the group and the Afghan central government was to be provided.

Part of the problem with non-compliance is said to be political disputes between Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, both of whom claim to have won Afghanistan's presidential election and have taken the oath separately.

Clashes in Afghanistan continue as the country is now plagued by the outbreak of the coronavirus. According to the latest statistics, the number of people living with corona in Afghanistan has reached more than 3,200 and the number of victims has reached 95.

Kabul officials warned on Tuesday that a third of the 500 people who were randomly tested for corona in the capital had 19 cases of covid.
